We made the point that a decimal number, such as 369, can be thought of as a sum. The parts of the sum are so many 100’s, so many 10’s, and so many 1’s. 100, 10, and 1 are, of course, the 2nd, 1st and 0 powers of 10. The “coefficient of 102” in the number 369 is therefore the number that tells us how many 100’s are to be used to make up the total 369.
