Let’s go over this carefully. We wanted you to write the product of
42 multiplied by
41 as a power of 4. We had given you the rule that the exponent of the product would be the
sum of the
exponents of the two numbers that were to be multiplied. So all you have to do is add the exponents in
42 and
41 to get the exponent of the product:
( 42 ) ( 41 ) = 4( 2 + 1) .
Besides,
42 = 16 , doesn’t it? and
41 = 4 . Therefore,
( 42 ) ( 41 ) = ( 16) ( 4) = 64.
64 is
43 isn’t it? But you had
42 for your answer.
